Why can’t I get things done?

Have you ever felt frustrated when you know what you want to do, but just can’t seem to figure out where to start? Something that should be easy takes forever? You start things but never seem to finish?

We all have the potential to set goals and to overcome challenges to achieve them. In order to do this we use a set of cognitive processes called executive skills or executive functions.

These skills help us to plan and organise ourselves and our environment. They help us to focus on important things and tune out distractions. Executive skills help us to manage our emotions and stay in control so we can do what we need to do.

For a variety of reasons we may struggle with particular aspects of executive functioning. This can include things like ADHD or dyslexia. Even without a diagnosis, we may find aspects of executive functioning hard.

If you are struggling with executive functioning skills, an Occupational Therapist can help to identify where the particular challenges or skills deficits are. They will then support you to develop skills and coping strategies, or in making changes to the environment to improve functioning. This will enable you to do the things you want to or need to do.
